Uptown Shopping Centre

The Uptown Shopping Centre brings a truly urban and inviting experience to British Columbia’s capital. Completed over 3 phases, this ‘lifestyle’ development encompasses approximately 1,000,000 square feet of buildings and landscaped spaces. Integrating a wide variety of sustainability measures, the complex is LEED® Neighbourhood Development (ND) Gold certified. In addition, many of its buildings have obtained LEED Gold certification.

Phase 1 — A New Development in Victoria

The first phase of work included the construction of six commercial retail units of over 300,000 square feet. These units were built above a large new multi-storey parkade constructed of cast-in-place and precast concrete. This initial phase was completed in 2010.

Phase 2—Addition of Major Retail Units

Phase 2 was completed in 2013 and included the construction of five additional commercial retail units as well as a new 6-storey, above grade parkade. This second phase spanned an area of 500,000 square feet.

Phase 3—More Space and Another High-Profile Tenant

The third and final phase was completed in 2016. Phase 3 added more parking in the underground and above ground parkade structures, as well as the addition of one large commercial retail unit, which was leased to Whole Foods. Totalling an additional 100,000 sq. ft, this final phase was constructed on a very tight site, and adjacent to an active shopping mall.

Working in an Operating Environment Throughout the Project

Working within close proximity to mall entrances posed a number of unique challenges, such as the safety and security of shoppers, noise and dust mitigation, and logistics—including restricted construction access and delivery areas. Strict noise and dust control measures were thus employed, and an active roadway through the site was maintained, in order to provide vehicle and pedestrian access to the existing mall.
