This project took a congestion hot spot and accident prone, multiple road intersection, and converged it over the CN rail tracks in the City’s first major traffic roundabout. This allowed for seamless flow of traffic and reduced both travel and idling times, which contributes to the City of London’s carbon reduction plan.
Built over the current three track CN lines, which have on average 45 train movements per day, the structure has a clear centre span of approximately 72 feet, which gives provision for future widening on the CN infrastructure.
Major modifications to the City’s street lighting, water, storm and sanitary services were required before shoring, piling and importing approximately 6,800 ton of granular materials.
The concrete structures for abutments and the overpass deck, which needed approximately 490,000 cubic metres of concrete, were cast in place. The project was completed with more than 3,500 tonnes of asphalt, landscaping and decorative fencing, while keeping train traffic uninterrupted throughout the duration of the works.
