A New Centre for a Growing Community
This 82,000-square-foot community centre offers an 8,700-square-foot public library and 7,000 square feet of community and multipurpose rooms. The fitness facility includes a 6 lanes semi-Olympic size pool, a leisure pool with movable bottom, a second-floor indoor running track around the double gymnasium opening, as well as a 25,000-square-foot fitness centre and free weights area.
Sustainability in Design, Construction and Operations
Environmental sustainability was prioritized in this LEED Gold project. A rainwater capture and storage system reduces water consumption by over 40%. Building and services designs were optimized to reduce energy use by over 42%. Commissioning was rigorously performed using best practice plans, with particular attention given to pool installation, finishing, waterproofing and testing. Finally, a measurement and verification system monitors efficiency and allows for precise adjustments to the building’s operations.
A Community Landmark for Sustainability
An off-site municipal storm water management facility, on the adjacent property, will control flow and quality of water. The roofing system consists of a mixture of high albedo roofing materials and a vegetative roof to reduce solar heat gain inside the building. It is also planned to reduce waste material going to landfill in excess of 75%, and a minimum of 20% of materials will be locally sourced. Serving as a model in the community, the facility operates a green housekeeping policy and offers a green educational program to visitors.
